The roots of Lars Ulrich and TAMA Drums run deep. Although the history books officially say it began in 1984, it's safe to say that this relationship of lifelong loyalty and mutual admiration really began several years earlier, in late 1981. It was around this time that Lars purchased his first CAMCO kit, a brand that had recently been acquired by TAMA's parent company, Hoshino Gakki. Shortly after that same drum kit debuted at Metallica's first ever show in March 1982.
In early 1984, Metallica's trek across the US brought bad luck when all of the band's gear was stolen. Undeterred, Lars spent the better part of a year renting drums, all the while without a drum kit he could call his own. In the fall of 1984, just after the release of Ride The Lightning, Lars found himself on the phone with one of TAMA's top sponsors at the time, Neil Peart. A surreal experience, to say the least, Neil's gracious spirit guided and opened the door for Lars and TAMA to begin their 40-year relationship. Lars and TAMA undoubtedly fueled each other on their path to success, a relationship strengthened by Lars's infusion of energy into the young TAMA brand and TAMA's unwavering support of Lars.
The decades that followed saw incredible growth for both Lars and TAMA as they attacked the journey side by side. The late 80s and early 90s saw the emergence of some of the most iconic drum kits, as Lars favored larger drums and even larger kits, made possible by TAMA's commitment to innovation and design. The introduction of the Lars Ulrich Signature Snare Drum in the early 2000s ushered in a completely new, loud, powerful, and aggressive sound palette. As new albums came out, so did Lars' new drum kits. Lars and TAMA worked closely together to create new and exciting custom colors for each kit, a process that to this day symbolizes the deep respect that Lars and TAMA have for each other.
To celebrate this extraordinary relationship, TAMA is proud to release the Lars Ulrich 40th Anniversary Signature Drum Kit. Limited to 72 drum kits worldwide, this anniversary model features the exact specifications of Lars' custom 72 Seasons Tour kit, featuring Starclassic Maple shells, a vibrant custom yellow finish, and custom gloss black hardware. Each drum set includes a hand-signed Certificate of Authenticity and is decorated with signed stickers inside each bass drum to add a detailed touch.
TAMA would like to express its deep appreciation and gratitude to Lars and Metallica for this incredible partnership spanning four decades and their dedication to TAMA both on and off stage.
