They are made of two plies of film bonded together. There is a vacuum between the layers of film, which is intended to dampen very high overtones and shorten the sustain. The result of such a construction is a fairly sharp, low sound with moderate attack. Its tonal characteristics are ideal for achieving a deeper and fuller drum sound that works in a variety of stage and studio situations.
