Bucket sticks is a very popular term for factory seconds from Vic Firth. The term comes from the fact that stores (like ours) and customers (like you) can purchase a whole bucket of sticks.
Often these are sticks that were meant to be painted black, but something went wrong. There was a lack of paint, a container change occurred, etc. Consequently, you can find perfectly good sticks in such a bucket, but their "coloration" does not allow the manufacturer to release them for normal sale.
Flaws on the sticks may also relate to other aspects. There may be deviations from the standard drumstick tip size. It is possible that some sticks will be shorter (not within a single pair, of course, but compared to standard ones) or that some knots will be more or less visible.
